issue with itin

I am trying to file my tax return with my wife. When the screen popped up it asked for my agi and my wife's agi. When I entered the AGIs I put the same for both. Then I got a rejected saying my spouses agi was incorrect. My spouse does not have any income so do I enter 0 for the spouse when I enter the agi again? Also, when I did try to go back in the system would not let me enter separate agi.

Hey,
Had the same problem. MFJ and rejected due to spousal AGI being incorrect. If 2023 was the first time filing MFJ with your spouse, put "MFS" as the status, giving you the ability to enter both your AGI and your spousal AGI, even though you filed MFJ last year. For your AGI, put the full AGI and put 0 for your spouse, who should have gotten the ITIN last year.
Good luck. I got rejected 5 times before this worked.

Hello JC222,
Did your spouse get an SSN this year, replacing an ITIN? If so, then you should only enter $0 for the person who had the ITIN and got a new SSN. Your tax return is being rejected for just the Spouse AGI e-file signature. That means the AGI is being accepted for the primary taxpayer, but your spouse AGI was not.
If your return has been rejected due to your spouse's AGI/PIN, here is what you can do which works for many people in the same situation.
- Go to the "Prior Year AGI or PIN" page in the Final Steps menu.
- Answer YES that you filed a prior year tax return.
- Click on the option that "Only the primary taxpayer (person listed first on the return) filed a return". Press Save and Continue
- On the "Let's verify using your 2023 AGI" screen answer YES, that you have access to the primary taxpayer's AGI and press Save and Continue.
- On the "What's your 2023 AGI?" screen, enter the suggested AGI for the primary taxpayer. Press Save and Continue.
- Continue and ignore any alerts and fill out the rest of the pages until you can press the Send Tax Return button.
