Telecommuting in New York State

I live in Washington DC and telecommute for a company in NYC. This is out of MY convivence.

When filling out the NYS form, one section asks "How much did you earn from NY as a non-resident?" There is a question on that section where it lists my "Total Nonresident Amount" and asks me to input the "New York Nonresident Amount."

I'm confused on what I should input? Is it zero because "If you telecommuted to your job from a location outside the state, those days will still count as New York working days unless certain specific conditions are met."

Thank you!

    Hi Taxman10888,

Is this the screen you are referring to?

If this is the screen you are looking at, then you would enter in the "New York Nonresident Amount" field the amount of income you earned from New York sources. If living outside of NY was for your convenience, as you stated, your wages earned for telecommuting to that New York-based company will be considered NY-source income, so would be entered in the "New York Nonresident Amount" field.

We do have another Community discussion related to this if you would like to check that out, as well: https://community.freetaxusa.com/discussion/comment/32#Comment_32?utm_source=community-search&utm_medium=organic-search&utm_term=new+york+telecommuting
