Why didn’t my fiance get the child tax credit?

My fiance and I file separately and we have a child that he claims every year. this year we didn’t get the child tax credit on his federal. even with his federal and state combined it doesn’t amount to what he said he was getting for just his federal. we’re just confused because when he went to file and submitted everything it told us he was getting a certain amount and he got half of what he was supposed to get.
