I work remotely in Florida, but live in Alabama, do I have to file a state tax return?

I am filing on behalf of my mom

Her situation is she moved to Alabama, and bought a house on 06/24/24, but she works remotely in Florida

Does she have to file a state tax return?

If I plug in 'part-time resident' it shows as though she's earning money in alabama, which is not true. I just don't want the return to get kicked back.

    Any ideas on this?

Florida doesn't have a state income tax, so the only question is whether she would have to file for Alabama. Have you checked the Alabama taxing authority's website to see their requirements for filing?

    Thanks for the reply!

It says 'Part year residents whose filing status is “Single” must file if gross income for the year is at least $4,000 while an Alabama resident'

Does this apply to income made in another state?

    Hello Shanemhartley,

As a resident of Alabama your mother will owe taxes on income earned from ALL sources while living in Alabama, even if she earned that working remotely for a Florida company. She must have earned more than $4,000, while living in Alabama, to be required to file a return.
