Hi,

My mom gets SSA 1099 form. She is not working and has no other income. She has a friend who told her she should still file taxes and could get a refund. Friend said she does that every year and gets a refund. I didn't think you could. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If a person's income is only from normal Social Security benefits, there's no way to get a Federal income tax refund unless the person voluntarily elected to have Federal taxes withheld from those payments throughout the year. There are no refundable credits available to taxpayers with no other sources of income. .

Your mother should ask her friend to provide details about how she is able obtain this refund.
