IRS Rejected my return

Last year, I started a return for 2023 taxes but never e-filed it. FreeTax does not have a record and confirms it was never filed. This year 2024 Tax year, I completed the tax return and it was filed. I did not have a pin number for 2023 and no AGI since return wasn't filed. Therefore, FreeTax used zero as my verification at submittal this year. I have received notice that the IRS rejected my 2024 tax return because the AGI does not match 2023. But, there is no return for 2023. I have tried several times to refile, but to no avail.

I need help in filing my tax return, but the things the website says to do are not helping.

Any advice?

    Hi Nanatax,

You are correct that if the IRS does not have a prior year return, they do not have a self-select PIN or your prior year AGI as e-file signatures. When your return is rejected in cases like this, some investigation is required.

First, request a transcript from the IRS. Find out if a return was filed, using your SSN without your authorization.

Second, select to file your return by mail. File it as soon as possible.

Third, if you find that a return for 2023 was filed, enroll in the IRS Identity Protection PIN program.

Sorry to hear it, I wish I could help

I've been having a similar issue, I'm quite frustrated with the lack of information/problem solving on this. Last year, I did file my 2023 taxes with TurboTax, but I did have it amended because I did not initially include my personal business income at first.

I referenced the AGI on my return, then was told I may need to reference my form 1040X, which has my AGI prior to the amendment… I tried so many times to locate where/ what that number might be, but scanning all my emails, IRS website, and my TurboTax account has given me nothing by way of getting my form prior to the amendment. All IRS.gov tells me is "yeah, it was amended and you should have gotten your refund." Like, yeah… I already knew that. Very frustrating.

Ultimately, I just entered in 0 since it was the only other recommended option.
