Medical expenses are deducted on Schedule A as an itemized deduction, but only to the extent that they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. And then, when combined with other itemized deductions (mortgage interest, state and local taxes up to $10,000, and charitable contributions) they exceed the standard deduction.

If you're not sure if you have enough deductions to make it worthwhile to claim them, you can enter them in the software and it will choose whichever is the more beneficial option (standard deduction or itemized deductions.)
