Retired and moved to another state

I retired from California in June 2024. I received monthly retirement pension payments starting 8/24. I then moved to Tennessee after house sold in September and became a resident of Tennessee on Nov 4 with a purchase of a house. How do I handle my retirement income? I have 5 months of pension total, 2 while in California, one in between residences, 2 while living in Tennessee.

You’ll want to file a part-year California return and report just the retirement income you got while you were still a CA resident. Once you became a Tennessee resident, you don’t owe TN any income tax since they don’t tax retirement income. So basically, CA gets to tax the months you lived there, and the rest isn’t taxed by either state.
