Looking to JUST file my state tax.

Hi all,

We filed married joint federally this year. My husband and I are residents of different states (MD and VA respectively). Both states allow residents of each state to file joint federal and file married separate for state taxes. We filed joint this year federally and are doing our state taxes. I'm trying to figure out how to just file mine (VA) on this website. VA doesn't have its own filing service like MD does, so he already did his. I'm stuck trying to figure out how to file my state return without filing a duplicate federal return on this site; is there any possibility to do so? I've preemptively done the paper form but I'm looking to do e-filing and VA only offers such things for businesses etc. plus, I'm trying to pay with my credit card. If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd really, REALLY appreciate it!

Thank you for your time! I hope you have a great day.

    Hello techons437!

State returns can only be e-filed if they are submitted from the same account as the original e-filed federal return. If you wish to e-file your state return, you will also need to e-file your federal return. If you have already filed your federal return using a different service, the only option will be to print and mail your state return.

Please note that the fee for the state return will still apply since our website charges for tax return preparation, not for e-filing. After you have paid for the state return, continue to the "Filing Method" screen and you will be able to select the option to MAIL in both of your returns. Continue through the screens until you get to the final screen under the "Final Steps" tab where you will be given instructions to mail in your state return. You will be prompted to print out and mail your federal return also, but you can ignore that if you have already filed your federal return.
