Moving abroad

I'm moving to Europe soon and for next year (2026) I'd like to know if I can still file my U.S. Federal taxes using FreeTaxUSA if I'm no longer a U.S. resident. I do not work so there will be no foreign earned income. I only have to file/report my small work pension from the U.S. which is also not enough income to pay income taxes on as it's less than $10,000 for the year.

    Hi Keno,

If using FreeTaxUSA software in Europe, you must use a U.S. based address for your tax return.

If you're a U.S. Citizen or National you may have a federal tax return filing requirement that includes all worldwide income regardless of where you live.

However, if you don't meet filing requirements as shown in Publication 17, under "Do I Have To File a Return?" in the introduction section, you aren't required to file an income tax return. Look at Table 1-1 for more information. It's about income, not what may or may not be taxable.

Thank you for your response. I will be required to file a return no matter how much or little my retirement income is because I always file married/separately. As for using a U.S. address while preparing my tax return with FreeTaxUSA, can I do that legally since I will be a permanent resident outside of the U.S.? Doesn't the IRS want to know my permanent residential address? I guess what I'm asking is, based on your statement, is it not possible to use a foreign address with FreeTaxUSA?
