How to amend a return that has already been amended once

I had my 2023 tax return prepared and amended by my accountant. I have since found another mistake and rather than continuing to deal with this person (he's not very helpful or responsive) I'd like to just make the second amendment myself. I understand that I need to input the original 2023 return first, but then what? Do I then replicate the first amended return and then do a second amended return? Any advice is welcome here. Thanks!

    Hi lightningbug26,

Thanks for joining our community and writing in with your question.

Sorry to hear things with your accountant have not worked out for you, and we appreciate you turning to FreeTaxUSA to get things straightened out.

First, however, in this particular instance you are not re-creating your original tax return. The amendment that was filed now supersedes the original for filing purposes. The amended return 'is' the new original for purposes of using FreeTaxUSA.

This means the tax return you're going to recreate first, is the amended return. Then, you amend the amended return.

Second, assuming the amended return was filed, and without knowing the timeframe, it is very important you allow the IRS time to process the amended return. Generally that takes 12 - 14 weeks.

For instance, if you filed your original return February 15th, the IRS would first need to process that original return. Assuming no issues, that would be done by March 15th generally speaking. Hopefully you allowed that to happen before filing the amended return. Then let's say you filed the amended return March 20th. Allowing 14 weeks for processing would be about June 24th (today). Ideally you received your refund first, or have paid the tax from the amended return.

You are now ready to amend the amended return in almost all instances.
