Yes, you'll need to enter either the taxpayer's prior year AGI or their prior year PIN to e-file the return. Your EFIN allows you to submit returns as a paid preparer, but it doesn't bypass the IRS identity verification requirements for the taxpayer.
Here's how it typically works:
For Identity Verification:
The IRS requires one of the following to verify the taxpayer's identity:
- Prior Year AGI - The adjusted gross income from the taxpayer's prior year return, OR
- Prior Year PIN - The five-digit PIN the taxpayer created when they filed last year
You only need one of these - not both.
If the taxpayer has an IP PIN:
If the IRS has issued the taxpayer an Identity Protection PIN, you'll need to enter their current IP PIN (not one from a prior year). The taxpayer can retrieve their current IP PIN at https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin
Your EFIN is essential for you to submit returns as a paid preparer, but it works alongside - not instead of - the taxpayer's identity verification information.
