does freetaxusa charge per state submission or just per state?
Yes- each time you file a different return it will cost $15.99 for a state return, Federal returns are always free. You can only file one return per account.
After you've paid (if you've ordered a state return) you'll have the option to select if you'd like to E-file or Mail your return. See pics below.
If you'd like to file only a federal return, you can remove your state return from your cart before you pay. See pics below-
Correct, since the state return is a paid product, you can only view it after you paid the state preparation fee, however you can view it prior to e-filing.
See the Review Tax Return screen on the Final Steps menu, after paying for your order.
Hi @gogo
Welcome to the FreeTaxUSA Community. Each state return you file will cost 15.99$ so if you file a return in two different states it will be $15.99 x 2 = $31.98. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!
I have 3 filers (3 separate filings) from ONE state. Will it cost $15.99 per filer (3 x $15.99 = $47.97) even though it is the same state?
Also, does FreeTaxUSA automatically produce a state return and give you the option to either efile the state or manually send it in? In other words, does it only charge $15.99 if I efile the state return?
@gogo
Are you saying you want to file 3 different 1040's?
Such as, one for you, one for spouse and one for your child. If you try and do it on the 1040 you made for yourself and then try and enter their info it will write over your 1040 and you will lose your data.
Each should have their own account.
If so, see this post.
If you need more support log in to your 1040 account and do a Chat.
@JLFTUFreeForum Yes three different 1040s. I am used to TurboTax and I use one "account" that allows me to efile up to 5 separate 1040 returns along with one state (one free state as long as it is the same state for all 5 filings). NOTE: I can generate as many 1040s I want, I just can't efile more than 5.
Therefore I assume with FreeTaxUSA, you get one free federal efiling for each account and that account allows you to efile a state return for $15.99?
Just to be on the safe side contact Support through their Chat.
I am just a user like you.
@RyanV Thank you. So I will not be able to see the state return until I order and pay for it?
@RyanV Thank you again. Last question (maybe)…will FreeTaxUSA work with Windows 10?
Hey @gogo that's a good question. Our software is web based and runs within your internet browser (such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox) rather than as a installed desktop program like past turbotax desktop products, so I believe our software should work - assuming your internet browser is up to date. Let me know if you are having any problems with this and if so I can ask another one of our Tax Pro's with expertise in this area to weigh in.
Additionally I found a similar thread here where you can read through the responses:
FreeTaxUSA is not a desktop software like TurboTax or H&R Block Desktop. There is no software to download.
It is web browser based. Even though I use Windows 11 all of my browsers Firefox, Chrome, Vivaldi and Brave can access my FTU 1040 account.
@JLFTUFreeForum I didn't know if the interface was affected depending on what Windows version I have…I read that web browsers are affected by the differences between Windows 10 and Windows 11, although major browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox run on both. The differences primarily involve performance, resource management, and UI design. I'm not smart enough to understand this stuff. :-(
@RyanV Unfortunately I don't think the posting directly answered the question, "Will this 2025 tax software run on my windows 10 machine?" The response kind of skirted around the issue IMO.
Yes it will.
FreeTaxUSA software runs within the browser. It does not matter what Operating System (OS) you have. Windows 10 or 11 or some people still run Windows 7.
You can be on a MAC computer and it will work because all you do is open a browser and type in the URL (web address) of FreeTaxUSA sames you would with a Windows OS.
Give it a try. Click on this link.

@RyanV Can I efile federal return and then come back, e.g. 2 weeks later, and purchase state?
