Married Filing Jointly, but wife lived and worked in a different state for first part of year

I lived and worked in PA all year. I got married in the spring. My wife lived in Ohio until the summer before moving in with me, so we now both live in PA. She earned income in Ohio, but has not earned income since moving to PA.

We are filing married jointly for the federal return, but I’m unsure on how to file for Ohio and PA state returns.

It’s my understanding that we could file separately for PA if we wanted to, but we would need to file married jointly for Ohio. Can I exclude my income from Ohio state taxes when doing the married jointly state tax return on FreeTaxUSA? And similarly how do i exclude my wife’s income from PA state taxes if we file jointly for state, or would we need to file separately?

    Hi TimH,

Although OH has the option to file using different filing status for spouses and use the nonresident credit, our software does NOT support that situation.

You may want file Married Filing Separate returns using two separate accounts.
