Qualifying dependent grandson, and he makes over $5,200

Hello,

My grandson is living with me all year. He USA citizen, and is full time student at University. FreeTax Community didn't allow me to select Full time student status, so not to limit income test of $5,200. He made close to $6K in 2025. Why is FreeTax not allowing me to select full time student for my grandson?

Hello Joyce:

Without the benefit of being able to review your tax return, let us make a suggestion. In this regard, select the Personal tab, and then in the drop-down, select Dependents. Because it appears you have already entered some information about your grandson, select Edit across from your grandson’s name.

Continue through our software until you reach the screen “Tell us more about [grandson’s name].” Review your answers on that screen, and specifically the question “Did they provide more than half of their own living expenses?” If “Yes” is selected to the question “Did they provide more than half of their own living expenses?” you will not see the question asking you about whether your grandson is a student. However, if “No” is selected, the next screen will have a question about whether your grandson was a student in 2025.
