Amended Return - Added Dependent, changed amount

Question

This may be a dumb question - we recently had a baby but it took longer than expected to receive his SSN. So ultimately I filed taxes and got a refund (I don't remember exacts so this is just an example figure) of lets say $5,000 federal, $500 state.

After completing the amendment, it changed to $0/$0 and then (again, example figures) $2,000 federal, $100 state.

That's not a decrease on my return, correct? That would be what I'm still owed in addition to what I've already received, yeah? It's late and I'm tired and just wanted to make sure I didn't have to pay back anything, thank you!

From what you’re describing, that is exactly how the amendment process works. When you begin an amendment and enter the refund or taxes paid amounts from your original filing, the system resets the return back to $0. This is simply the starting point for recalculating your amended return.

After you make your adjustments—such as adding your new dependent—the refund amounts are recalculated. If the amounts appear in green, that means you are due an additional refund on top of what you have already received. If the amounts appear in red, that would indicate you owe additional tax to either the federal or state agency.
