Without being able to review your account, it’s difficult for us to know the reason why our software has flagged an error with your date of birth. You are correct in that the IRS will compare the birth date you enter on your tax return with the birth date on your Social Security card, and if they don’t match, your tax return will likely be rejected.

Our software will flag a date of birth as “invalid” if the taxpayer has not entered their date of birth in the proper format. For example, the taxpayer must enter two numbers for the month (for example 01 for January or 10 for October) followed by two numbers for the day (for example 01 for the first day of the month and 22 for the twenty-second day of the month) and four numbers for the birth year (for example 1985 or 2000). Double check that you have entered your date of birth in the proper format.

I am her son and the executor, is it possible they are confusing my SS# with hers?

Can I go ahead and mail the return without waiting for the IRS to reject it again so that I do not miss the filing deadline? Her birthdate is the same as it was last year but I mailed that return and it was not rejected. I thought I would send it electronically this year so faster and easier. There is a dis-connect somewhere.

If you are filing a tax return on behalf of someone else, you will want to make sure you have created a new account and will not use your individual tax account to prepare a return for another individual.

If you have resubmitted a tax return, you will want to wait for an acceptance or rejection before you mail the return so the IRS does not have duplicate returns.

Thank you for the reply, good information. The account I used was one I had used for her previously so thought I needed to use it. The return has been rejected twice from IRS so I feel safe just mailing it in. I had already mailed in the Form 56 for an executor to the same location. Thanks again.

My husband and I are having the same issue with his date of birth rejecting. Everything is correct, I re-entered the date 2 times and still nothing. Haven't had this issue in previous years of filing. Anyone know why? Or a fix?

Hello Ohmy,

Even when the date of birth appears correct, the most common cause of this rejection is an incorrectly entered Social Security Number. Please go to Personal, then Taxpayer Information, and double-check the SSN, the spelling of the first and last name, and that the month and day are not accidentally switched.

If everything looks correct and the return continues to reject, the issue may be a mismatch in the Social Security Administration's records. You can contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to verify what they have on file. If a correction is needed on their end, you would need to wait about 10 days before trying to e-file again. Alternatively, you can print and mail the return by going to Final Steps and selecting the mail option.
