Why was my state return almost $500 less than what FreeTaxUSA said it'd be?

I'd understand if it was a small amount but I was told I'd get $659 from the state but only received $176. I looked up the reasons that can happen and none of them apply to me. The federal return was exactly what I was told to expect.

    Since your federal refund was correct, the discrepancy is on the state's end. The state may have made an adjustment to your return or applied an offset that we would not have visibility into. Your state tax agency should be able to tell you exactly why the amount was reduced. You should also watch for a notice in the mail from the state, which will typically explain any changes made to your refund.
