Requiring the creation of an IRS PIN when filing on an extention?

My husband and I don't have an IRS PIN, we filed an extention and when I went to submit today, it required us to create one? So, I entered five numbers (that we would remember) and submitted it. Only to be rejected. I go in and remove the pin to resubmit and it won't let me? HELP
