Hello, I recently hit on a machine for $2668. I had to give my ID and Social to receive my money, but I also was given a 1099 form. Come tax time, I was wondering about how much it will take from my total return when I file. I’m in Nebraska and my yearly annual income won’t exceed 24k or 25k this year

Hi Itslivewire, the amount you won doesn't automatically come directly out of your refund. Instead, it's added to your other income and may increase your federal and Nebraska tax. The actual effect depends on your filing status, total income, deductions, credits, and whether federal or Nebraska tax was withheld from the winnings, so it's hard for me to estimate without all the details of your situation. If no tax was withheld, the winnings may reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe.
When you prepare your return, enter the winnings using the information exactly as shown on the form you received. Gambling winnings involving a wager are generally reported on Form W-2G rather than Form 1099, so please verify the form title and any withholding amounts before entering it. Gambling income not on a W-2G form can be reported by selecting Income > Uncommon Income > Other Income. You should report the full winnings amount, not only the amount left after subtracting what you wagered. Gambling losses cannot be used to reduce the winnings directly; they may generally be claimed separately only if you itemize deductions.
If you want to estimate how the winnings may affect your return, you can create a separate “dummy” or test account in FreeTaxUSA and enter your projected income and other information there. The software will calculate an estimated refund or amount owed, but do not complete the Final Steps section or file that test return. Keep the test account separate from the account you’ll use for your actual return. A separate account can be used to estimate tax scenarios without affecting the real return, but projected amounts should be replaced with actual figures before filing.0
