I am planning to move from VA to NJ. What's the best time to move for a simple tax filing purpose?

I am planning to move from VA to NJ. Actually I can be very flexible. I just wonder: what's the best time for me to move, so that I don't have to file tax in all three states, for a simple tax filing purpose?

Thank you so much.

    Hello onyxlee,

Great question! It is typically simplest to move right at the beginning of the year. If you do, you could potentially file as a full-year resident of Virginia for 2023, then a full-year resident of New Jersey for 2024. Doing that can allow you to avoid filing as a part-year resident of either state.

Filing as a part-year resident works fine, but you often are required to allocate wages and other income to one state or the other, based on residency. If you move right at the beginning of the year, then you can avoid that.
