Missing page 1 of Form 8949

Hello, I went to Summary to download the Capital Gains (Losses) worksheet in order to double-check my numbers. The document has Schedule D, page 1 and 2. For Form 8949 I only see page 2. When I downloaded the entire tax return under View Federal Tax Return it is also missing page 1. Is this a bug? I think it has to be filed with Schedule D form, correct? Thanks.

Thank you for this observation. It is possible that the page 1 of Form 8949 is not required to be printed and thus would not be gathered on the previewed return. The best next step is to contact FreeTaxUSA by message, or if you have the Deluxe/Pro Support upgrade, by chat for a Support agent to check your account directly. These contact options will be located in your account Support Center. You will get the help you need for this issue.

    Hello xilex,

I bet you only had long-term capital gains, right? Page 1 of the 8949 is for short term and page 2 is for long-term. You only complete the pages that are needed.

Thanks. I had both short and long term capital losses, and have several entries on the 1099-B section. But in the PDF preview, it only has one of those entries.

I'm able to reproduce this issue with my federal tax return as well! I also have both short term and long term capital gains. This definitely seems like a bug. This form is very similar for me between this year and last year. I used FreeTaxUSA last year and it was able to generate page 1 of Form 8949 just fine, but not this time.

Hello jchou! The Schedule D instructions say to use Form 8949 to list your transactions for lines 1b, 2, 3, 8b, 9, and 10. Is it possible that you had short-term gains reported on line 1a of Schedule D this year? If so, that would explain why Form 8949 was not generated for those transactions.

As CoryF mentioned above, our Customer Support would be happy to look into the specifics of your return and see why pg 1 of Form 8949 isn't generating in your situation. Please sign in to your account and contact us there so that we can review your entries and get you the help you need for this issue.

Hi Henry! Thanks for the info. I reached out to Customer Support, and they responded with:

I can see page 1 with short term capital gains and losses listed on your return. Is there something specific you are looking for that you are not seeing? If you are not able to see it, perhaps try a different browser or clear your cache and cookies before trying again. Let me know if you need anything else.I can see page 1 with short term capital gains and losses listed on your return. Is there something specific you are looking for that you are not seeing? I am indeed not seeing page 1 of Form 8949, whereas the Customer Support specialist says they are seeing it. I tried with a different browser (Safari) as suggested, but am still getting the same result. Please advise. Thank you!

    Hello jchou,

When you view your tax return and the Schedule D, are your Short-term Capital Gains listed in Part I all on Line 1a? If so, that line says, " Totals for all short-term transactions reported on Form 1099-B for which basis was reported to the IRS and for which you have no adjustments (see instructions).
However, if you choose to report all these transactions on Form 8949, leave this line blank and go to line 1b"

If that is the case, and there is nothing for Schedule D Line 1b, 2 or 3, then this would explain why you do not have page 1 of the 8949 in your return.

I have both short term (Schedule D, 1a) and long term (Schedule D, 8a) losses.

After reading the text for Schedule D, 8a: "Totals for all long-term transactions reported on Form 1099-B for which basis was reported to the IRS and for which you have no adjustments (see instructions). However, if you choose to report all these transactions on Form 8949, leave this line blank and go line 8b."

I guess the tax software opted for the first option.
