Hello, we added a heat pump to our home this year. How do we file for the tax credit for that?

A related question. We built a new house in 2023. We paid extra for a heat pump. Can we amend our 2023 return to take advantage of the tax credit?

    Hello Tyler,

You can claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit by navigating to the Deductions/Credits > Home Energy Credit page in our software.

Starting on that page, you will be walked through some questions about the improvements you made to your home. Once you have answered all of the questions in this section, the software will calculate the amount of credit that you qualify for.

For more information about the credit and it's requirements, feel free to visit this IRS page:

To address Sparsile's related question, yes you can amend your 2023 return to take advantage of this tax credit. The path to claim the credit for 2023 is the same, you will want to go to Deductions/Credits > Home Energy Credit after starting your amendment.

Please note that because your heat pump was included in a new build instead of an addition to a pre-existing home, you will likely qualify for the Residential Clean Energy Credit instead. This credit is slightly different than the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.

To learn more about the Residential Clean Energy Credit you are welcome to visit this IRS page:

A similar question: We replaced our old furnace with an electric heat pump system this past year. So, I selected yes for "did you make energy efficiency improvements to your home in the United States during 2024?"

On the page "Enter any 2024 residential clean energy costs" none of the options apply (solar, wind, and GEOTHERMAL heat pump costs). Further into this section on "Enter any expenses for energy property expenditures for your home" there is a section for electric of natural gas heat pumps. I entered the replacement costs into this section. However, I keep getting an error because I selected yes on the first page and then did not add any values to the "Enter any 2024 residential clean energy costs" page. The system calculates my return, but continues to prompt me to make a correction.

If I select no on the initial page, it won't let me proceed through the section to the page that covers the electric heat pump. Am I filling out the information incorrectly or do I not need to worry about the error message?
