Married Filing Separately with 1099-G and Spouse W2

My wife and I want to file separately for student loan repayment reasons. I had a 1099-G and she had a W2. I know we ultimately add together our totals and report 50% of each, but I am struggling to understand how to do this using FreeTax's systems. I know they cannot submit the return, but I assumed I could fill out their prompts and print/mail the forms.

When inputting information, do I select that I have a 1099-G and report 50% of the income/tax? Then select W2 and report 50% of my wife's income/tax? Then do the same for her return? I cannot seem to find a source detailing the process.

    Hello Icebound34

Generally speaking when you select to use the Married, filing separate status, you only need to enter your income and deductions. This is true unless you live in a community property state.

In a community property state, most assets and income acquired during marriage are jointly owned by both spouses. Consequently, if you are filing your federal and state tax returns as married filing separately, you must report half of all community income along with all of your separate income on your tax return.

We have a great article that outlines the steps of allocating your income and deductions when you file separately in a community property state.
