on Freetaxuse, i am filling tax forms as married jointly. Me and wife both have High deductable Health Plan in 2024.

My HSA contribution for 2024 is at 3,600 and my wife is at 4,439, which totals to 8,039 and the 2024 family HSA limit is 8,300. So why does the tax site say my wife over contributed by 289? why is it looking at my wife's limit at individually when we both had family HDHP?

    Hello Swapnil86,

If both you and your wife had family HDHP coverage for all of 2024, you are correct that your combined HSA contribution limit is $8,300. So if FreeTaxUSA says your wife over-contributed, it likely means the software doesn’t recognize her family coverage and is applying the lower individual limit of $4,150. Double-check that both of you are marked as having family HDHP coverage for all 12 months in the HSA section. As long as your total contributions ($8,039) stay under the family limit, and both spouses are correctly marked as having family plans, there shouldn’t be an excess.

Lastly, you may need to adjust how the limit is allocated between each spouse on the 'How should we split the HSA contribution limit?' screen. You'll typically want to make sure that you allocate to your spouse at least the amount she contributed: $4,439.
