Newbie needs Software Info

Hi All, I have been using a different tax software for the past few years. For 2024 they had changed their GUI. Although I downloaded the "Deluxe" version it was upgraded by the software to Premium and I could not file my returns without paying an additional $100. That's the end of that software for me. I have not used FreeTax USA but plan to. Here are a few questions that I'm concerned about.

Should I just re-enter all my personal at the start of is there some way to have it pulled from the 2024 return done with different software?

I'm a retired law enforcement officer and am wondering if that feature is in the FreeTax USA software for health insurance premiums?

Will the data on my Federal return be transferred to my CA return?

Does the software, for the state, make the appropriate required adjustments?

Will the software have all of the updates for the current law changes i.e. the senior deduction?

Thanks for any help.

    Hello TioStan,

Welcome to FreeTaxUSA! To import your previous year’s tax return PDF, create an account, select "Filed online with another service," and choose "Import my previous tax return." If you need assistance, click the blue question mark next to any prompt.

When you import, details such as your name, address, and dependents will transfer automatically. You’ll only need to enter the new information from this year’s forms. Here is a guide if it's your First time using FreeTaxUSA and the basics of navigating our software.

If you’re a retired law enforcement professional and receive Form 1099-R, indicate you are a retired Public Safety Officer at the bottom of the screen in the Retirement Income (1099-R) section. Enter any health insurance premiums from Box 5 on the same screen; the software will prompt additional questions on the following screens.

Federal tax information is also used to prepare your state return. State specific information and adjustments will be entered in the State portion of your account. For a list of supported federal and state forms, visit https://www.freetaxusa.com/forms .

The software is updated every year to stay compliant with current tax regulations. Your birth date entered after starting your account is used to determine which deductions you may qualify for. The senior deduction will automatically be applied according to your age. We have a FreeTaxUSA Community article explaining the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) changes as well.
