Do I count as dependent?
I'm somewhat confused if I am dependent for 2024. For the first semester of college (January to May) I was a full time college student working part time. Once summer started I went full time and kept it. This semester (August to December) I am a part time college student. I switched back to part time work (making $15,340 gross), and part time college student until next semester. I turned 19 in June this year as well.
I also don't cover most of my expenses. College was covered via Financial aid and home, bills, food, and general care is coverd via my parents. The only thing I pay is my insurance on my car.
I'm just in that grey area but since I was full time college for 5 months of 2024, and don't cover more than half of my payments for general living I just don't know what to file for.

Hello dev2006,
To qualify as a dependent a college student must meet criteria for relationship, age, student status, residency, and support. The student generally must be under age 24, younger than the person claiming them, and live with the person claiming them for more than half the year (with temporary absences counting as time at home). The student cannot provide more than half of their own support and generally cannot file a joint tax return. They must be a full-time student for at least five months at a qualifying school and meet citizenship or residency requirements.
Based on the details you have provided it sounds like your parents can claim you as a dependent.
- You were a full-time student for 5 months (Jan - May)
- Your parent provided more than half your support and you live with them
- You are under 24 years old
- You are their child - relationship testThe amount of income you earned does not disqualify you from being their dependent. Keep in mind that when your parents claim you, they should also claim the college tuition credits on their return.
You can use this IRS Interactive Assistant as if you were your parent to confirm.
