I submitted my tax form and then received a 1095-C for my health insurance coverage. Do I need to file an amend for the premium tax credit?

Per the IRS, only the 1095-A needs to be entered on the 2023 individual income tax return. If you received a form 1095-B or 1095-C, the information on these forms is not entered on the tax return. I'm including a link to a FAQ on the IRS.GOV website, expand #15 - "Am I required to file a tax return if I receive one of these forms?"

The short answer is, for 2023, no, you do not need to amend your 2023 tax return to include the information from your form 1095-C.

I have a 1095-B form for healthcare coverage. Don't see any option to add this form into FTU? This is needed for filing in Massachusetts for 2025 taxes?

Can we get an updated answer for 2025?

    What needs to be entered?

    1095-A?

    1095-B?

    1095-C? Employer Provided Health Insurance

What is the difference behind the difference?

    Hello DTM and Hopeful,

Form 1095-C(Employer Offered or Enrolled Coverage) is informational only and shows the health insurance coverage offered to you by your employer. You don't need to enter it anywhere on your tax return, and receiving it after filing doesn't require you to amend.

From 1095-B(Proof of Health Coverage) is not required for your 2025 federal return. This form is showing you have minimum essential coverage. Some states require this information, such as Massachusetts.

If you are filing for a state, such as MA, that requires you to report health insurance coverage, enter this directly in the state section of the software. Use the information from the 1095-B form to fill out the "Taxpayer Health Insurance" screens.

Form 1095-A(Health Insurance Marketplace Statement) must be entered on your federal tax return. If you or anyone on your tax return received the Premium Tax Credit or had advance payments of this credit, it will be reported on this form. The 1095-A form provides information about your Marketplace coverage and details who was covered and when the coverage was in effect.

If you received advance payments on Form 1095-A, Lines 21-33, you must file a tax return and include Form 8962. Filing your return without reconciling your advance payments will delay your refund and may affect future advance credit payments.
