Dependent question
My 18 year old daughter, who lives with me, filed her taxes with Freetaxusa and she answered No to the question "Can a parent (or somebody else) claim you as a dependent on their tax return?" when in fact I plan to claim her this year as I provided more than half her support for 2025. We started an amended return and answered that question with Yes and then the following "Will this person actually claim you on their tax return?" with Yes. Her refund amounts are both at $0 on the amended return - she has already received the refund money from the initial filing and when I get to the end it said nothing had been changed and asked if I wanted to continue anyway. Does answering these questions change anything on her return besides her deduction amount? She only made $6438 in 2025 and it appears even with changing those questions her standard deduction ($6888) will cover the entire amount she made. Does she still need to file an amendment so I can claim her without causing issues for both of us?

Hello Sparky256DSL,
I would still recommend amending the tax return if you plan on claiming her. You can only claim a person once on a tax return so the IRS should eventually look into this if she doesn't amend return. It may not impact her return at all, but it would impact your return since you plan on claiming her.
Please note that since amendments take months to process, you will need to mail in your return since the IRS's e-filing system will reject yours if you claim your daughter.0
