Charging for State Tax Filing
Hi, for the past couple of years my income has been greatly reduced (I am semi-retired).
In fact, I don't owe ANYTHING for state taxes (nothing is withheld by Employer).
WHY DOES FTUSA NOT LET ME PAST THE 'REVIEW' step of process without PAYING THE $ 17.99 for State Filing? That seems dishonest, misleading, and just plain WRONG.

Hi ALhal, I'm sorry for any confusion in the filing process. The software will automatically walk you through entering your state information, but you can decide whether you need/want to file the state return when you get to the Final Steps portion of the interview. If you aren't claiming a refund and don't have a filing requirement, you can simply remove the state return from your order when you reach the order screen.
If you have already paid for a state return that you don't actually need and don't plan to file, we'd like to help with that. Please reach out to Customer Support to request a refund by signing in to your account, clicking on SUPPORT in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, and sending a message.

I have to file a state tax return to get a low-income rebate from my state; but now freetaxusa wants to charge me $15.99 to file my state tax return. I believe this used to be free. Why are you now charging me, just so I can get my state rebate?

Have you tried accessing FreeTaxUSA through the IRS FreeFile program? https://www.irs.gov/e-file-do-your-taxes-for-free

Yes, that is how I initially got freetax usa…. been using it for a couple of years; since it was offered; but now I have to pay that $15.99+tax State tax return

Why? Do you no longer qualify for that program?

YEW, I still qualify for the program…. In fact my income is even less than last years. WHY did FreeTax USA charge me for my State Tax return? There were NO other options offered: either file Fed Tax Only, or file Fed tax and file State tax for a fee of $15+tax payable to FreeTax USA. This is definately false advertising and it's very unfortunate. What can I do?

Type… sorry… supposed to say YES. (now yew)

If you want free filing (Fed and State) with ANY of the IRS FreeFile partners (including FTUSA,) you have to start with the link on the IRS website. You can't start at FTUSA.

I started with the link on the IRS website; then I went to FreeTax USA; FreeTaxUSA has all my previous information; I got an email from FreeTaxUSA to do my 2025 taxes; so I did: The Fed filing was free; but FREETax USA charged me $15+tax to do my State taxes.
