Form 5695 reporting windows and doors

I installed hurricane‑rated windows and exterior doors. They are not Energy Star and the manufacturer won’t provide a QMID. The vendor told me to put the cost on Form 5695 Line 3. Is that correct, and what is the IRS‑safe way to handle this?”

Hi MJ198, I'm sorry to hear the vendor gave you that guidance. Line 3 of Form 5695 is where qualified small wind energy property costs are reported. These are costs for property that uses a wind turbine to generate electricity, which doesn't sound like what you are hoping to report.

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit is claimed on Part II of Form 5695, and costs for exterior doors go on Line 19, while costs for exterior windows go on Line 20.

The IRS instructions for Form 5695 are very specific about what's required for windows and exterior doors. Here's what the IRS says directly:
    - Line 19: "Exterior doors that meet the applicable Energy Star requirements."
    - Line 20: "Windows and skylights that meet Energy Star certification requirements."

In addition, the IRS states that "no credit will be allowed for qualifying property unless it was made by a qualified manufacturer," and a valid QMID must be included on the return. If the manufacturer hasn't registered with the IRS and can't provide a QMID, the products are not considered "qualified property" under the law.

Hurricane-rated or impact-resistant windows and doors are excellent for storm protection, but I'm afraid that designation alone does not satisfy the Energy Star or qualified manufacturer requirements for this credit. The safest approach may be to leave them off the form entirely.
