If my husband filed using standard deduction, must I do the same (we file separately)?

We have filed in previous years, married filing separately and because he itemizes, I have also done the same. For 2025, he filed (he uses a professional tax preparer) using the standard deduction and he just told me that. Now, I've almost finished my tax return (using your online service) and must I now change my my status to standard deduction, instead of itemizing? And do I need to file a complete and new return?

    Hello Huf,

If you have entered all your information for itemized deductions, which end up greater than the standard deduction, you may override the itemized deduction and choose the standard deduction. Here is how you do that:

    1. Select the Deductions/Credits menu and click Deductions Summary. image.png
    2. On the Deduction Summary, select the radio button for Standard Deduction and then check the box, "I am sure I want to take the Standard Deduction…."
