Separated: Husband won't give info.

My husband moved out 8-25. We live in MA, so not a community property state. We are Married Filing Separately.

The State section asks for his Total Federal Income, Federal Adjusted Gross Income, & # dependents. He refuses to give me that info. The software will let me leave those fields blank, but I don't know if that is a problem. (I noticed when I scanned my tax forms in for Federal, if the value was 0, the software left the field blank.)

Do I have to paper file? If so, I think I can file Federal through the tax software w/o this info., but am unsure how to bypass State to do it.

Thanks for your help!

Hello DixieLee! I want to clarify the Massachusetts rule on this. According to the 2025 MA Form 1 instructions, the requirement to combine your income figures with your spouse's applies only if you were living in the same household for the entire last 6 months of 2025 (July through December). Since your husband moved out on August 25, you were not living together for that full period, so the requirement to combine income figures would not be applicable. You can leave those three fields blank and should be able to e-file your Massachusetts return without any issues.
