How do I file my State return without filing my Federal return?

I am currently trying to send in my nonresident MS state 2024 return that I did not file last year. I had already submitted my 2024 federal and state return for MI, where I am located. I previously did my 2024 taxes on turbotax, and making the switch this year to freetaxusa.

I've paid to have my MS state taxes to be e-filed but its asking me to how I want my Federal return. It wont give me an option to skip filing. I can only say to e-file my federal or mail it in. Should I select the "mail it in" option to get past this? If so will there be any issues with the IRS looking for a mailed in option?

Hello BNN100 - Yes, you'll select 'mail my return' for both the federal and state. Since you already e-filed your 2024 federal and state tax return for MI with another provider, if you attempt to e-file again, the IRS will automatically reject your return. In our software you'll need to print and mail your MS state tax return. You'll be given instructions on what to include when mailing your state return.

FreeTaxUSA charges a state return preparation fee.

It is a lack of how taxes work nationally that ties this program to do BOTH FED and State, SEPARATE them!!! not all states require income tax filing and if you moved I am in limbo because I already did my Federal taxes and just need to do taxes with the state. Make it an option. I just wasted my time, I wish I knew this before I put all my info in at the tail end of 2 hours….get with it.

    Hi Blueskies,

In the past we were able to e-file state only returns. However, states moved away from that option and started requiring that a state return be attached to an e-filed accepted return.

Some state have an online portal to file your state only return. You may want to see your state's website to see if they offer that and then try that option. The only option in our software is to mail a state-only return if you used another service to file your federal return.
