How To Amend Roth IRA Withdrawal
Help
Member Posts: 1 Newcomer
I need to amend my 2025 return because I contributed too much to my Roth IRA and had to withdraw a portion back to my brokerage account (no backdoor). I don't want to get the 6% penalty from IRS.
I filled out the excess contribution amount on the IRA contributions section of FreeTaxUSA but the 1040X preview doesn't include a 5329, 8606, or any information that indicates to the IRS that I withdrew the excess out of my Roth. I don't have a 1099R until 2027. How can I get this information to reflect on my amended return?

Hi Help,
If you withdraw excess Roth IRA contributions and earnings by the tax filing deadline (including extensions), you generally do not need to file Form 5329 to report the withdrawal, as the IRS treats the contribution as never made. Only the earnings removed are reported, not the excess contribution itself. The earning will not be reported until you get the 1099-R in 2027. Then you will return to your 2025 account and file an amendment if needed.0
