Hello Robzv44! I'm sorry to hear about the situation you're in and I understand how frustrating it must be to plan around a refund that then changed.

When the IRS processes your return, they sometimes make corrections or adjustments on their end, and those changes are made by the IRS directly. The letter you received is an IRS notice (commonly a CP12 or similar) that tells you the IRS found something on your return that they corrected, which resulted in a different refund amount. Common reasons include a difference between what was reported on your return and what the IRS has on file from your employer or other income sources, a credit that was adjusted, or a math correction.

The most important thing to do right now is look at the notice carefully. There should be a section that explains exactly what the IRS changed. If you agree with the change, no action is needed and you'll receive the adjusted refund. If you disagree with the change, you generally have 60 days from the date on the notice to contact the IRS.

I suggest that you log into your account and review your filed return to compare it against what the IRS has changed, this can help you determine if the adjustment was correct. If you disagree with the IRS, there should be information on your notice that provides you with steps you can take. If you have questions, you are welcome to contact our support team directly. This will provide us with direct access to your account to assist you further as needed.
