If you need to change your bank account that was entered on a return that was already filed, then please note that the IRS doesn't allow a bank account to be corrected once the return has been filed. However, rest assured that the IRS will mail a check to the address on record for you if they aren't able to deposit the refund.

Make sure to track the status of your refund on the IRS's Where's My Refund? tool so you know when it's been issued.

    Hello Hoppingtr,

If your return has already been accepted, then you will not be able to change the account number. If your return has not been submitted, then you can change the bank account information in the Final Steps section of the software. For more specifics related to your individual account, please reach out to us from the support center in your account, as we will have access to your account information from there.

When people ask about changing bank account when filing, you always AI auto-respond by telling them that they can't do anything if the tax is already filed. Fair enough. But you never answer the simple question of how to just change the # if you HAVEN'T yet filed? I wanted to change the account # that was imported from OLT or State of MI last year [that in itself is scary] and couldn't find anything anywhere with a simple answer. You didn't bother to answer 3 people asking this question, and BTW we shouldn't even have to ask it, there should be simple instrux for such a simple question on the page that is likely to generate the question. Defaulting to lazy AI and if it's too **** to have answer, the question is just ignored. Not a way to build a biz.

You can change it when you go through all the screens in Final Steps. It has you either add or verify (or change) your bank info for both a federal refund and state refund as well as look through your return and such. Basically, there is a whole section for bank account info before you file.
