Why do CA teachers not pay income tax?

my wife is a teacher at the public level and every paycheck, no income tax was taken out by the state or federal government. This caused us to owe thousands last year and I am curious if I am doing something wrong or what?

Hi! If you are not seeing income tax being withdrawn from your paycheck, you should contact your employer and look at you W-4. When you start working somewhere - you will fill out a W-4 for your employer. This will tell both the state and federal government about your tax status and help calculate the tax amount that will be taken from each paycheck. If you are not seeing an amount being withdrawn, you may want to update this form to ensure that you do not end up owing a large amount at the time you file your tax return.
