Which year do I put down for my NYS inflation refund check? The 1099-G says tax year 2025 in box 1, but obviously that's not an option for my 2025 tax return. The payment was based on my 2023 tax filing status and income, would I say it's a refund from 2023 then?
I was given stipends for a total amount of around $1,800 for a program I was in for a few weeks last year since it was Monday-Friday in the daytime so a lot of people couldn’t attend work. No books, lodging, or tuition was necessary in regards to the stipends, it was entirely supplemental. I’m not sure if this is true, but…
I’m handling tax prep for a deceased parent’s trust/estate for the first time and feeling a bit lost. Not sure which forms are required or whether I should use software or a tax professional. Any tips, experiences, or service recommendations would really help.
Legally, I am still married. I have no taxable income, only non-taxable spousal support. I understand I may not be required to file, but would it be advisable to file a zero-income return in my situation?
I entered $1,915 of other income on the miscellaneous page (due to an HSA excess) and nowhere else in the "other income" category. However, on my Federal Tax Summary page it shows that I have $3,830 of other income. What am I missing? Why don't those numbers match?
In 2025 I participated in a paid fellowship program with the University of Texas HSC - Houston for a professional certification. Disbursement of the funds required completion of milestones at various intervals throughout the fellowship program, and continued participation until the fellowship ended in August 2025. What…
Hello! Last year, I completed a degree-required educational internship in which I received stipends to reimburse my educational expenses. I received a 1099-MISC that reports that total reimbursement amount in Box 3, "other income," and again in Box 18, "State income." Since that amount was an educational reimbursement, how…
My wife & I both received checks from the settlement of a Class Action lawsuit. The lawsuit had to do with the retirement program offered by our former employer. Federal taxes were withheld from both of our settlement checks. I thought that I'd enter this income as Other Income but that option doesn't provide me with an…
Hi, everyone. My question is whether an erroneous store refund is taxable income. In two unrelated instances, I returned merchandise that I had purchased, and I received a refund for more than I had paid. The first time, I bought something on sale and when I returned it, the store mistakenly refunded me the full price. The…
We want to take advantage of the additional $6,000 deduction (per 65+ person, married filing jointly) in 2025, and maximize the withdrawal within the 12% tax bracket. To calculate how much I can withdraw within the 12% bracket it seems to me that I will add: $94,300 (the maximum adjusted income within the 12% bracket)…
