My son turned 18 in August in the same month he started working. Do I claim him as a dependent or does he need to file taxes by himself?

    Hi!

For your child to qualify as a dependent, they must be under the age of 19 or a student younger than 24 at the end of the calendar year. If you financially support your son, you most likely will continue to claim him as a dependent for the upcoming return. To get more specific confirmation regarding your situation, the IRS has a great tool where you will fill out a survey regarding your situation and the IRS will tell you if you can claim your son as a dependent - I will link the IRS site below.

In the case you claim your son, he may still need to file a tax return depending on his income status. If you have claimed him on your return, he will just need to make sure to select that he is a dependent when filing his individual return.
