My son (age 28) lives with me. He makes around 10k. I pay for the majority of his expenses, I know he makes too much for me to claim him, but can't I still claim head of household with qualifying person, as per the IRS rules. Freetaxusa used to provide this option but appears to no longer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While you can claim Head of Household filing status with someone who is not a dependent, that person still has to meet the gross income test to be a qualifying person. So if your son earned more than $5,050 in 2024, he would not qualify. You can use this IRS Interactive Tax Assistant to determine your correct fililng status: https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/what-is-my-filing-status
