HSA contribution made while in NY. It got added to CA return

I am in the process of filing my 2024 tax. I was in CA until late July 2024, and I did not make any HSA contribution while in CA.

Starting August 2024, I moved to NY, and through my new NY job started making HSA contribution. The HSA amount is strictly on my NY W2.

However, it seems like after I entered the HSA information at the federal level, this amount was automatically pulled to my CA state tax instead of my NY state tax. Any idea how I can fix this? Thank you.

    Hello,

There could be a few reasons why the software may be doing that.

    1. Have you filed your NY return yet? If not, the software may be automatically adding it to your CA return since there is no other place for it to go.
    2. If you have filed, it may be that there was something missed on the questionnaire.

The best thing would be to contact customer support and have them check what you have entered to see why it is being reported on your CA return.

I'm running into the same issue. I moved from CA to NY in August, but my entire year's HSA contributions are being added to CA, and I can't figure out how to edit it.

In reviewing the instructions for Schedule CA for Form 540NR, the two items are specified:

"Enter the amount of any employer HSA contribution from federal Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, box 12, code W on line 1h, column C."

    AND

"Federal law allows a deduction for contributions to an HSA account. California law does not conform. Enter the amount from line 13, column A, on line 13, column B."

Per these instructions, California does not have you allocate HSA contributions, which is why the software would not have asked.

thank you. It makes sense why the software did it that way.
