How far back can I revise and refile taxes to claim dependents?

My ex won the right to claim our son as a dependent in our 2012 divorce, but I recently learned that if she doesn’t have income enough to file taxes, I can claim him. Is it just as easy as editing my FreeTaxUSA filings and mailing them in?

    Hello,

If you are filing with the intent to claim him and get a refund, then usually you have 3 years from the original filing deadline to either file or amend and claim a refund. So for this upcoming tax year, you can go back to the 2020 tax return and claim him and expect a refund.

Otherwise, you can amend it, but you will not got a refund for tax years 2019 and earlier.
