Missing a form or page that didn’t upload?
Live in NJ work in Phila PA. I know that I don’t need to fill out a PA return. I also know that I can use Phila locality tax as a sort of credit for NJ return.
From my employer I have what looks like 3 forms. Federal, state local. I uploaded forms to software but looks like the local didn’t upload.
I was talking to my payroll department and they said that on software you should have 3 sections in software.
Income and taxes withheld boxes 1-6
State taxes boxes 15-17
Local taxes which should have Pennsylvania associated state, local wages and tips, local income tax and locality name 51 PHILA.
I don’t see the Local taxes section in free tax USA which would have PA associated state, wages and local income tax.
Help appreciated.

Hello Macher,
You may need to make a manual entry on your W2 you uploaded. Since you have NJ taxes on Line 15-17, you will need to click on Add State to enter boxes 18-20 for Phila. Then select the state PA from the dropdown box, include the PA State ID Number, 16-17 blank and fill in 18-20 for Phila. Here is what that would look like in FreeTaxUSA.

Oh wow! Thanks! I’ll give that a shot.
My payroll gave me snap shot of a different software and it looks different but I’ll try that.If I do that will free tax USA be able to tell it’s a reciprocal agreement and be able to use Phila local tax as sort of a credit towards NJ?
-
ok done that what you suggested. Now it’s asking select the state that this local tax belongs too?
-
Hi Macher,
Make sure when you add a new state line, that you pick the state of PA, even though it was a local tax.
-
ok did that under asks what state does this local tax belong too.
-
Thanks again! I did that and underneath it’s asking which state does this local tax belong too.

Hi Matthew finally got it right with help with online chat and email support, hopefully I’ll remember next year.
However noticed one problem. Since I live in NJ and work in Phila PA I don’t need a PA state return. Support said to add PA as a state and make sure $0 taxes. So now I have 2 state returns and the charge would be for 2 state returns.

If all tax is coming from PA whether state or local, use PA as the state selection.
-
I was told my online chat to add PA but make sure $0 taxes. I did that and everything looks good but…
Now I have 2 state returns in free tax. I’m only suppose to submit a NJ state return.

Hi Macher,
New Jersey and Pennsylvania have tax reciprocity, which means you only need to file the NJ state return. Remove the PA return from your account using the Your State Returns page.
However, you should claim a credit for taxes paid to Philly on your NJ return.
-
If I remove the PA return from software, will refund and what I owe stay the same though? I don’t want this to get messed up.
-
Removing the PA return from your account should not impact your NJ tax return refund or tax due.
-
gotcha thanks!

ok with help from email and chat support everything looks good. Hopefully I’ll remember next year.
However I literally just noticed a problem. Customer support said to add PA return and make sure $0 tax which I did. Now I have a NJ and PA return and not required to submit a PA return. Free tax wants to charge for 2 state returns.

You don't need to file a PA return in your case. You can remove it by going to the Your State Returns page on the State menu.

Thanks!
