Forgot 1099-R Form

I filed my taxes last month and both my state and federal returns were accepted by the IRS. Today I stumbled upon a 1099-R form that I forgot to file. Here's where it gets complicated… I only filed an Alabama state return because the only jobs I worked in 2023 were in that state. However, I drained my retirement account in March of 2023 that was linked to a job I worked in Wisconsin. Was I supposed to file a Wisconsin state return just for that one 1099 form? Please help, I don't know much about taxes.

Hi wolf6903, thanks for writing us with your question.

You can amend your tax return in FreeTaxUSA to include the 1099-R form.

Log into your account, click on the FreeTaxUSA logo in the upper left hand corner. When the page refreshes you can choose the option to amend your return.

Whether you need to file a Wisconsin state tax return has more to do if you lived there and/or had income from a WI source/employer. Did you live in WI during 2023? If so, you may have a filing requirement (see page 3). Did you earn any money from a WI source/employer in 2023? If so, you may have a filing requirement.

If no to either question you don't need to file a WI state tax return.

Your retirement withdrawal in and of itself is not considered a source of income from Wisconsin.

Assuming your work was done in WI in a year prior to 2023, you would have filed a Wisconsin state tax return as necessary in that year when you earned the money.

Thank you so much. I didn't live in or earn and money in WI in 2023. I do have another question though. When I go submit my amendment, it is asking if the retirement income is fully exempt from Alabama income. Should I select yes or no? The retirement income was earned in Wisconsin but I was fully living and working in Alabama for all of 2023 when I took the withdrawal.

    Hi wolf6903,

I won't be able to tell you if you can select yes or not because I don't know the facts and circumstances of the retirement income.

However, the federal amount is usually the amount taxable to Alabama unless (1) you have a different cost basis in your distribution for Alabama purposes or (2) the distribution was received from an exempt retirement system, such as the Alabama Teachers Retirement System.

Alabama allows for some retirement income to be excluded while some of it may be included.

There is a blue hyperlink on the page for this question "What retirement income is NOT taxable on your Alabama return?"

Check that link information. It has a long list of exempt retirement income. You can also look at page 7 here in the 2023, Alabama DOR Booklet 40A instructions which will tell you what is and what is not excluded as income, including types of retirement income.
