Hello I had debt that I owed in 2014 and during covid the IRS decided to use one of my refunds to pay off my debt instead of sending it out. I was fine with that but When I received the notice it said I had an overpayment in which it was applied to of $2 in which I believe was supposed to be the refund amount. In which would of paid my debt off. But instead of getting the refund or paying off my debt I still owe because of this error. The back taxes was in 2014 and the refund amount was from 2020.

Hi Babydahlz88, it sounds like it would be a good idea to speak with the IRS to get this cleared up. You can try calling the IRS (1-800-829-1040) and explaining the situation over the phone, but it may be more helpful to meet with someone in person if possible. You can go to this IRS website to locate your local IRS office and set up an appointment.

If that doesn't work, you may want to consider contacting the Taxpayer Advocate Service. This is an independent organization within the IRS whose job is to ensure that every taxpayer is treated fairly and that you know and understand your rights. Their advocates can help if you have tax problems that you can’t resolve on your own. Here is a link to their website with more information.

For more personalized assistance, you can sign into a FreeTaxUSA account and one of our agents can help you with a specific scenario. Generally, if you have questions on how your refund is garnished, you will need to contact the IRS directly. Having documentation on your own end about any underpayments, overpayments, etc. may be helpful in figuring out a timeline and clearing up any confusion. IRS Topic n. 203 goes into detail about reduced refunds and how to contact the IRS about questions you may have regarding your own.
