Dependent vs Independent Mistake

My daughter submitted her return and claimed herself as an independent. We didn't realize the mistake until my spouse and I submitted our return and it was rejected. My daughter amended her return. She was charged a fee and paid back her refund. We resubmitted our return, but it is still being rejected. What else do we need to do?

Hello Echo,
Mailing will likely be your best option here. Even though the amended return has been accepted, it can take the IRS 8-16 weeks to fully process it in their system. Until that processing is complete, your e-filed return will continue to be rejected because the IRS system still shows the original filing information.
If you mail your return, you can get it submitted right away without waiting for the amendment to fully process. You may want to include a brief note explaining that your daughter filed an amended return to indicate that she can be claimed as a dependent, which will help clarify the situation for the IRS.0
