Do I need to put these stipends on my tax return?

I was given stipends for a total amount of around $1,800 for a program I was in for a few weeks last year since it was Monday-Friday in the daytime so a lot of people couldn’t attend work. No books, lodging, or tuition was necessary in regards to the stipends, it was entirely supplemental. I’m not sure if this is true, but I was told the stipends came from a grant if that’s of importance. I was not given any tax forms for the stipends. Do I need to report them on my tax return and if so how would I go about doing that?

    Hello Bird55,

Generally, stipends received for general living expenses are considered taxable income and do need to be reported on your tax return, even if you did not receive a W-2 or 1099 for them. Since your stipends were not for tuition, books, or lodging, they would typically be treated as taxable income.

To enter them in your return, go to Income, then Other Income, and enter the amount under the Miscellaneous Income section at the bottom of that page. You can find more information about taxable and nontaxable income here: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/what-is-taxable-and-nontaxable-income
