How to submit tax forms for job in Wisconsin as a Michigan resident
I am a Michigan resident about to take a 9 month long job in Wisconsin. I plan on moving back to Michigan afterwards, and my spouse will live and work in Michigan during my out-of-state job.
I know that Michigan and Wisconsin have a reciprocal tax agreement. So, if I submit a W-220 to my employer to be exempt from Wisconsin state taxes, will my Michigan state taxes automatically be withheld? Or do I need to submit an MI W4 to my employer as well, to ensure that my Michigan state taxes are withheld?

Hello dc123,
That is a good question. No, your Michigan state taxes will not automatically be withheld just because you submit a W-220 to exempt yourself from Wisconsin taxes. Because reciprocity only cancels out the out-of-state withholding, you must submit a Michigan withholding form (Form MI-W4) to your employer to ensure they start withholding your Michigan state taxes.
Talk to your Wisconsin employer. They may not be able to withhold Michigan state income taxes. If that is the case, you may want to make some estimated payment to Michigan. https://www.michigan.gov/taxes/iit/iitpayments
