Hello Mike28579,
It may depend on what you have entered before that. If your dependent is a minor still, the question about being a full time student is not going to appear. It is for those dependents who have turned 19 or older as there are some credits that have some additional requirements for the adult children in order to qualify.0 -
I'm having a similar issue - I do see the full-time student box on my taxes, but do not see it on her taxes (19 year old). Thanks

I selected full time student but IRS has rejected my return twice. I prepared my son's return on Free tax USA and my (father) using FTUSA. You tell me I must amend son's return, but there is no question on the amended 1040x to not claim yourself. Because you cannot claim yourself as your own dependent. So what am I to do? I cannot amend my son's return and I cannot file my wife's and mine MFJ return. What do I do to file my return? The IRS is completely inept in following the US tax law. This is insane!

Hi NelsonG,
In situations like this, you must amend your child's return and answer the question on the Personal Information page that someone can claim them on another return.
For your return, you must select the option to mail your MFJ return, since it will still get rejected. The IRS does not update the e-file system with amendment information. So you have to mail your MFJ return after you help your dependent, who is a college student, amend their return.0
